EA has tried this before, with predictable results. In 2020, EA Sports UFC 4 included full-screen ads for the Amazon Prime series The Boys that would appear during ‘Replay’ moments. These were absent from the game when it launched, with EA introducing the ads about a month later, thereby preventing them from being highlighted in reviews. It wasn’t long before the backlash led to EA disabling the ads.

A lot of people are having a lot of issues with video games these days, and I experience almost none of that pain, because I (generally) stick to indie titles. These days games have never been better, but publishers have never been worse.

Oh man, I could go on lol. Here’s a few notable ones though:

          Factorio
          Noita
          Stardew Valley
          Terraria
          Project Zomboid
          FTL
          (Etc.)

It’s honestly hard to explain just how cool it is. If you watch the trailer and think it’s a cool idea, just know that the game absolutely delivers on it 500%.

Noita is so, so, so much more than it seems from the reviews and trailers. Trust me. If the core gameplay looks cool to you, pick it up, and then know that once you’ve “beaten” the game the first time (took me 40 hours to do) you’ve experienced approximately 5% of the total game content. Noita is an Easter egg wrapped inside four secrets wrapped in an enigma. One of my favorite games ever made.

Exactly. It’s even easier for me to put their games on an Ignore List than for them to insert ads.

I don’t mind ads on ingame billboards like how old Need For Speed games had like, Old Spice or Gillette or Cingular Wireless ads as a static texture on a billboard in the game world. Or some of the buildings in the game had branding on them like a Best Buy building. As long as it fits into the world setting I don’t consider those intrusive or obstructive to the experience. For example, I would expect there to be none of those kinds of ads in a game like Skyrim since it is a fantasy setting and those kinds of settings never have ads for anything other than market booth signs on the market tent or something.

However, those are the only kind of ad I am okay with. Fullscreen popups and big boxes that take up space eon menu screens is a huge problem.

I predict EA will not return to the former style I mentioned and will likely only attempt the latter again with disastrous results.

I recently bought the Prototype games cause they were on sale and I wanted to replay them for funsies.

The first game came out in like 2009 and there are billboards around the city for GameStop, Jersey Boys, I saw one that was just DC’s old 2000s logo. I think there were one or two other billboards in-game with real companies on them, the rest were made up.

I thought it was interesting to see because you don’t see it in games anymore unless you mod it.

I remember playing Midnight Club 3 when I was a kid and learning about KidRobot from their in world billboards. It fits really well in a racing game.

I’ll never forget back in the day when Anarchy Online sold adspace on the virtual billboards in their cities. Fanta bought nearly all of it. The same Fanta ad was everywhere. It was hilarious.

Fellow gamers, now is the time to push back on this crap. If you don’t do it now, you’ll live with this forever. They tried doing this in past generations as well, and failed.

Spread the word, tell others. Be vocal! Advocate for this not happening.

And if someone tells you that this isn’t preventable, tell them not to be cynical. Remind them of the other positive changes we were able to have happen recently in gaming, and that in the past when they tried this, the pushback was successful in keeping the gaming companies from doing so.

And remember, some of those you would try to convince are probably astroturfers/bots.

Do it and get appropriately lambasted EA, I dare you scummy bastards! Android Wilson is such a foolish individual. What would truly stimulate growth for them is making great games people would want to buy. Advertisements in games are a strong hell no from me. One of the main reasons why I avoid EA games is because of their scummy history in the gaming space, if they could let go of their shortsighted greed; I could be inclined to reward those slavering executives with a game purchase. However, they won’t until it really tanks their sales to the point of desperation.

I… don’t actually care if they put them on a billboard in the game—if the game is free.

Social communities like Lemmy aren’t their target demographic. Mostly, it’s our job to ignore them until they buy a studio we actually like.

Every one of you deserve this. Can’t wait to see more of this stuff.

We should have pushed back against ads the minute we saw ads coming. You can’t wait until its annoying.

So since we can’t beat them, join them. I hope thar one day i can help put ads in every space so you can’t ever escape them. We’re 90% there.
