It is always interesting to consider how humans invented things like this.
I’d immainge that once a group of people found a frozen lake and realized that you could walk on it, they would quickly find it slippery, and laugh at eachother as they fall over.
Soon they start to learn how to control how they slip and and start seeing how to slip the furthest.
Someone may get a piece of wood stuck to their shoe and start slipping much further.
Wooden soles made for ice sliding are being made, people start figuring out that a narrow blade works better, then it was a question of. refinement.
Bones, they used bones instead of wood.
How metal
Makes sense, harder and smoother than wood
I think it would be the progression from gathering firewood in the winter. They would notice that logs are easier to drag in the snow/on ice. Logs also glide way more easily along their length as opposed to across the side. So maybe you pick a couple long logs to pile all your other sticks on so you can drag a whole heap of wood in one go. Eventually that gets refined into a sleigh with bone runners. Then you just need someone who wants to have some fun with the idea and plays around with making a miniature version they can strap to their feet.
And skis before skates.
I similar process I always enjoy reading and pointing out is the invention of … cheese
First it was a bunch of people who said … “hey we drink mother’s milk when we were babies right? … why don’t do the same thing with this cow? … how about a goat? … how about a horse?”
Then it went to … “I don’t want to drink it all right now … let’s just keep it all in this sack I made from a goat’s stomach … neat it works great … now I have snack food for later”
Then … “oh crap, all my milk has gone solid for some reason … but I’m hungry … let’s try this white stuff and see what happens … huh … it didn’t kill me or make me sick”
2,000 years later … milk and cheese is a perfectly normal part of our human diet
Seeing posts like this is always slightly frustrating, because (as you say) new inventions and whatnot are always very iterative, but these posts just try to make the concept sound funny as if someone miraculously had the idea of the final product just out of nowhere.
