Slop is for gossip, the only rule for fake news is that it’s OC only. I didn’t think “Mark Wahlberg Claims Elon Musk’s Botched Penis Implant Wouldn’t Have Gone Down Like That If He Was Attending Surgeon” was going to set off the “I can’t actually tell if this is real and that makes me upset” brigade.

“I can’t actually tell if this is real and that makes me upset” brigade.

pretty dickish way to put “autistic person gets fooled by deliberate impersonation posts”

fake news is just sometimes unfunny, impersonation where you try to play on someone else’s existing reputation to say upsetting shit and point and laugh at anyone who cares enough to be upset by it is a different category.

I agree there should be a comm that allows this though. I expect in fakenews it wouldn’t actually get removed but idk, and ofc there’s comms on other instances for it.

Maybe I’m being over sensitive, going back through the comm there’s one satirical post almost 2 weeks ago and it just seems like the complaints are outsized for how often this kind of stuff is posted.

I just assumed you were referring to the metapost on grad recently that got locked because people were getting a little heated in the comments. Which was specifically about the impersonation of wtypstan and xiaohongshu.

I think complaints about fakenews are mostly either “I don’t think its funny and want the ability to block it” or “some users are using it in a harassing/impersonating way” (which hasn’t been a major issue lately but was briefly years ago iirc

The main problem in my opinion with the xiaohongshu impersonator post was that it was literally just Zenzposting but with weird piss fetish stuff buried at the end but if impersonation is what got it removed fine I guess.

I mean yeah, I also don’t find that funny, but I don’t think it needs to be banned entirely from the site, we have containment comms for a reason. Honestly even the impersonation would have been… I hesitate to say fine but not a big deal, if it was just used to make a bit post in fakenews or badposting or something.

It wasn’t in the “containment” comm, it was posted here in c/chat. And now that I checked, it wasn’t even actually removed, it just got the impersonator account banned. The posts are still up and unlocked now.

The trouble with containment comms is that those contained in them don’t actually stay contained.

outright bans of certain types of posts also won’t prevent someone from registering new accounts and making them anyhow any more than containment comms do, its a matter of moderation

I agree they are obviously inappropriate for c/chat. I reported both of them, lets see what happens

I usually see people post satire in the chapotraphouse comm.

My gripe with the slop comm is that people sometimes post real news stories there. The slop comm says in the sidebar and in the launch announcement that the purpose of the slop comm is discussing “anonymous reactionary bullshit”. By that definition, the White House, Trump, Democratic Party, Republican Party should not be posted in the slop comm. If Trump says something stupid, it could be news or politics. If Trump enacts new tariffs, that is a news story, not slop. If the Republican Party or Democrat party says that they are going to do something stupid, that is politics. When the White House, says something bad that is politics. Slop is when a random citizen, voter, redditor, etc says something reactionary.

Wait, people actually complain about hardtimes and onion articles? That’s baffling. They’re silly shitposts that clearly label themselves, it’s not at all like the problem of “literally this one poster keeps making ‘news’ posts where the joke is that it’s a lie and not even like a funny one” that c/fakenews was made to quarantine.

The last time I posted an Onion-esque article, again 2 months ago half the comments were telling me to take it elsewhere and someone reported it. I get that there are people who have trouble parsing this kind of stuff but it’s easy to check and even when I get got I laugh it off and go about my day.

    Lol, ass

I just don’t find that type of post funny and would rather have them blocked at once. I was actually thinking that having the post removed wasn’t helping because there wouldn’t be a nice place for such posts to reside that I could then block lmao

I’m sorry that was a little harsh, the last Onion article I posted two months ago had half the comments complaining about it and apparently got reported, figured this was esoteric enough I was gonna dodge complaints.

      • Yeah, if the post wasn’t removed I woulda mentioned that I didn’t mean any ill will towards you for making the post lol - the disgusted “ugh” didn’t help with the tone though I’m sure.

IMO it’s weird that this type of post isn’t allowed on c/fakenews, but I admit the mind of the fakenews mod is an enigma to me
