  • It’s hard to get into it without spoilers so I’ll try to be unspoilery while giving the general of the first season so far:

    spoiler

The main character is pretty glib and cynical. Even before the event that kicks off the series, she is shown to be a bummer. She struggles with enjoying things and seems to resent other people’s ability to enjoy things. It’s hard to say that the show frames her as being correct in her stubborn individuality. So far her only valid reason for being angry is that her girlfriend dies during the initial reboot of humanity as it causes her to fall down and hit her head. The hivemind hasn’t actually been shown to be directly evil or mischievous. However you can read an ulterior motive or something happening behind the scenes if you try. That is to say most of her stubbornness comes from her own pre-hivemind personal issues, or social issues that don’t have anything to do with the hivemind. She reveals that she had some adolescent trauma which causes distrust.

We simply don’t have enough information yet to suss out the motives of the hivemind. With all we have to go on right now, they seem nice and functional as a new society, albeit a little odd. I assume this is the writer playing with our expectations about alien invasions. He did write on X-Files after all. Vince probably wants us to think something bad is going to happen to put us in the same headspace as the main character. You can also argue that there are breadcrumbs to find out the hivemind is bad. The show lays out information very much in the same way BrBa/BCS did.

I will say that this show beats you over the head with how prestige it is. You get lingering shots that seem to exist more for cinematography composition nerds than any real narrative function in the show. The show is deliberately paced with little sprinkles of information in between long character moments. It’s more of a Better Call Saul character show than a Breaking Bad genre show. Apple TV lists it as “Drama, Sci-fi” so I don’t think this is going to be a sci-fi heavy show, or sci-fi horror/thriller.

  • Historically, from what I understand, it was people who understood theory but sat on the sidelines while Monday morning quarter-backing revolutions. While revolutionaries were out doing stuff, testing ideas, coming up with new theory, the ultras would nitpick every action as wrong. They were always around for a debate and criticism but conspicuously didn’t have much to contribute otherwise. They’re overly academic about action and dogmatic about theory.

The reason it comes up is because people think they’re doing something useful (whether they are or not) and are criticized for it (whether valid or not). It feels like someone being unnecessarily critical of a productive action (whether actually productive or not). Since it’s an internet debate and nobody wants to be owned, the person doing the action will never see it as unproductive or the criticism as necessary. The ultra will always want to see the action as unproductive and feel there is nothing harsh about their criticism.

We had a self-proclaimed ultra at one point. They would write paragraphs every week about why ultras are the correct tendency. They were banned several times. I assume they’re still around under an alt and learned not to be so obvious. But I also assume people are looking for ultras when criticized because it’s the internet and nobody wants to be owned.

  • It’s so bad idk what to do. I struggled for a long time to find a job that could support me and was tolerable. Four years of that and they shut down. Now I’m trying to find something else but can’t. It’s hard to even find jobs that pay more than $15 an hour. I feel like I’ve seen wages fall over the past 6 months on top of scarcity.

I’m doing seasonal work now just to stave off defaulting and being unable to afford car insurance. My savings are gone and using credit will just make things worse.

I’ve had one in person interview that went well but the company decided to not hire me. The position is still open. I had one phone interview. I have a video interview next week but I expect it just to be something for HR to keep busy rather than hire.

  • I’m kind of hoping it will be like a new Marvel movie and not do as well as the previous one. But I also think we’re seeing the nature of gaming transform. We’re going from these solitary or multiplayer experiences to a viral, meta experience. People will buy the game because doing so will allow them gain social media influence. Right now there is some no-name gamer youtube channel that will be a millionaire in a few years due to this game. That’s already what we have seen. Aspiring influencers latch on to a viral game and then gain a massive following, even off of one or two games. You get people not only racing to finish the game first but videos on how to do things in the game, details, bugs, lore, speed running, glitches, cheats. Go see how many “Details in RDR 2” videos there are on youtube and how successful they are. Then you get the periphery content of visiting the real locations, cosplay, and humor.

There will be a goldrush to be one of the GTA 6 influencers. Then all that hype will drive further sales in people who just want to play the game. Even if the sentiment on GTA has cooled, the increase in social media from 2012/2013 to 2028 will drive interest.

My theory is that Rockstar already knows this. They’re designing the game around this idea. I also think it’s the present and future of corporate game development overall. God knows what monetization they have cooked up since shark cards and how that ties into all this. The depravity will be astounding. I’m waiting to see if they do any partnerships with influencers. There were also rumors that the game will have a social media simulator that’s more in-depth that V’s facebook parody. Who knows if that’s real or how it would relate to the monetization and real social media.
