  • A game can be challenging without involving character death. And the funny thing is, I’m not sure being able to die is what makes it challenging. I think it all comes down to : how much did character actions and player decisions mattered into the character surviving or dying ?

I do love the possibility of dying myself because I know that if I don’t act right or do something stupid, I won’t be saved and will suffer the consequences of it. But this implies that it’s my choice that kills me. If my choice doesn’t kill me, then it sucks. If it’s the choice of another character, then it’s akind to pvp and fuck that. And if it’s the choice of a NPC or a God, might as well tell me that I shouldn’t have come to play.

Note, I said CHOICE, not actions. A NPc can choose to try and kill me, if I also have choices to get me out of there.

  • I ask for die rolls in roleplaying either for the lols on flavoring moments that don’t impact the narrative deeply, or when something could and couldn’t work.

For example, my players tried to convince dragons to make business with their own tribe. I had made them roll for Persuasion. Not only have they succeeded, the result was incredible. So from that moment and on and on, one of the dragon is deeply in need of shrooms and their tribe actually produce a lot of shrooms. Since then, that dragon was pressuring it’s brothers and sisters to do trading with the tribe for delicious shrooms. Even to the point of sabotaging communications in an attempt to get more of them.

  • Step 1 : post about the game with every info I would like to know as a newcoming player Step 2 : a form to weed out people not interested enough to fill it and with a few questions about their style. Step 3 : vocal interview. A must ever since I okayed a player per writing and found out at session 1 that their voice was so fucking annoying to me. Step 4 : session 0 where you check if everyone is on the same wavelenght or not and where you set your boudaries abour your table Worked pretty well for me.

  • So Im right then ? It can be a starting point, but you cannot follow a story closely without intense railroading or insane luck.

But I agree. You can adapt a UNIVERSE with characters and places and even events if possible.

But then thats not new. We DMs have been stealing ideas left and right for generations for our own stories. Sticking to one universe is another way to do it.

But it would feel… forced for me. Like if you met Aragorn. The players know what he should be doing, so does he forget this and stick to the uneased players not happy to stear that part of the story, or does he only do a cheap cameo ? Thats assuming they know the story, which might be a no too since the movie is like 20 years old now.
