You could say it comes with some threads attached.

Thing is, GDPR also applies in the UK and CCPA applies in California where Threads is active so legally they have to delete your profile regardless of what they say in their FAQ

I think they’re trying to make it like it’s not a separate app, but part of instagram.

Curious, if EU based instances allow interoperability with Threads. Would this be a way for Meta to gather data on EU based users without GDPR compliance, even if Threads itself is not available in the EU?

True, unless they may want to structure the data they’d prefer to collect maybe? If they become a primary force in this market could they impose their own “standards”? Where other instance admins would enforce locally, just to conform and grow/monetize?

I’ve never used Facebook, & have their entire ad ecosystem blocked at my router. It’s wonderful.

They won’t. At this point is this still unknown for the majority of people? Maybe I’m jaded but it seems like everyone knows they’re being farmed for data but they don’t care enough because fb/ig/everything these days is too convenient/addicting.

Most people tend to dismiss things tey don’t experience themselves. They don’t really see the impact of data harvesting could have. Its kind of same with climate change.

And people are seriously considering federating with Threads if it implements ActivityPub. Things have been so crazy recently that I think If Satan existed and started a Lemmy instance, probably there would still be people arguing in good faith for federating with him.

Deleting posts after a certain date on Mastodon is definitely one of my favorite features. Of course if your monetization strategy involves user data, then they’ll never offer that option. Why would they want you to delete money from their pocket!

Next genius idea, if you happen to have an account on multiple instances on the Fediverse the deletion of one will delete them all ☠️

Is that not how it works already? If you use the same account for multiple instances you don’t have to delete it multiple times.

Except for the fact that they’re two different things and there’s no valid reason for not letting people keep one but not the other.

To many people, their Instagram account has become a big (and toxic, but that’s besides the point) part of their sense of self. To delete their Instagram would be to delete a significant part of their identity. Having to do that to get rid of Threads is emotional blackmail of the worst kind.

…do you not? To delete the data I mean, not just to make it appear deleted to everyone without access to the Google/Meta user database.

If you want to delete something that is part of your Google account, then yes. Like your Gmail address. But not if you want to delete your account in an entirely different service, that only uses Google for the login. I guess the problem is, that Threads is perceived (and maybe also marketed) as an independent service while it’s apparently just part of your Instagram account.

Might depend on who you talk to. Everyone I spoke to about it was under the same understanding that it’s integrated deeply with your Instagram account.

I spun up my old burner Instagram account to check the platform out. They tell you that you can only change things like your name from Instagram, the app let’s you import all other profile info from Instagram, and when you login for the first time it shows you the thread profiles of everyone you follow on Instagram and gives you a button to add them all.

It’s not just an Auth method, it’s the same account with the ability to change a few things between apps. Plenty of reasons to hate Threads, but this ain’t it.

is it supposed to be a different apps? I thought it was supposed to be a subset of Instragram from the very beginning
