My friends and I are looking for a new game to play on Xbox and i had a couple wisdoms about helldivers. We are FPS/strategy fans. We loved CoD/Titanfall/gears pve/pvx modes. We need some sense of progression or we lose interest in the game. There are 3 of us.

  1. Would the 3 of us be able to play together and just be us or would we need to add another to play all the game content?
  2. If just two of us play would we leave our friends to far behind progression wise or would we be able to catch him up/ play his missions?
  3. What is the state of the game now? Would you encourage your friends to start now?
  4. What does the progression look like? Is it static missions you need to play through or can you just do one off missions launch and kill sort of thing that are randomly generated?
  5. Is Build diversity a thing? Or are you hampered if your friend decides to play with only pistols?

    1. Yes, you can all play together and just be a squad of 3.
    2. If you bring in your under leveled friend on the higher difficulties it’s funny as Hell and a right of passage. Lower geared Helldivers can absolutely contribute to victory in higher difficulties, if they know exactly what they’re doing.
    3. Jump in whenever. Fight what you want.
    4. You get a number of missions in a campaign depending on difficulty. The missions are objective based which repeat and cycle in and out. The maps are randomly generated and never feel the same.
    5. Build diversity is actually a thing. You can’t take only pistols. You must take a primary weapon, secondary (side) weapon, and a throwable (usually grenade). You get stratagems to call down and they give access to heavier weapons.

To clarify point 5, you get three weapons you can equip on your person. A long arm (AR, shotgun, smg, or DMR), a side arm (pistols, revolvers, some melee weapons, etc.), and a third slot which is varied in purpose. There are:

      • recoiless launchers
      • disposable launchers
      • drum grenade launchers
      • antimateriel rifles
      • personal shields
      • shoulder mounted cannons
      • and I might be missing a few others.

Additionally, you also have a backpack slot, which is also varied. There are drone backpacks, ammo packpacks, and bubble/directional shield backpacks.

And some armours have bonuses to playstyles. The one I use is a heavy armour variant with a bonus to melee damage. There are other offensive bonuses, like more weapon stability while crouching or prone, but most bonuses here are defensive.
