Person I’m dating was upgrading to a Switch 2 and I was amenable to buying their used Switch 1 off of them.
So, now I have a Switch 1. I don’t really know what to do on it. I’m not familiar with the Switch 1 game catalogue, yet. I haven’t been keeping tabs on Nintendo since the Gamecube days. I had a similar experience with buying a Wii after it was old news and that was cool until they stopped supporting online features for the device (so I couldn’t download any more retro-catalogue games).
So, I guess I’m hoping to finally get all the retro games I like on the Switch 1 via its online features. Also, hoping to grab a few banger games for guests to play whenever they are visiting me. I also have several friends with Switches at this point so I guess online multiplayer might be of interest.
So, what I’d like to know:
- Should I be concerned about online support for the Switch 1 suddenly vanishing like it did with the Wii in the near future?
- What are your game recommendations for single player?
- What are your game recommendations for in-person multiplayer?
- Any particularly great multiplayer titles where you can play online with people you know?
For single player, Pokemon Legends Arceus is fantastic. It’s the game that 8 year old me wanted when I said I wanted a Pokemon game on a home console. Almost all the Pokemon are catchable without buying anything else, with there being 2 that are locked behind missions unlocked by buying the other games. The game plays more like monster hunter than a traditional Pokemon game, using stealth, crafting, and pokemonless “combat” to get opportunities to catch them. Easily the most fun I’ve had with a video game since booting up Skyrim in middle school.
i didn’t really care for the story, but the gameplay was incredibly fun. i liked that it was more focused on exploration and research rather than combat, with the sneaking mechanic allowing you to capture pokemon without having to fight them.
i also had a really good time with new pokemon snap, but it’s pretty slow paced so it might not be for everyone.
Bad story can be a hard pill to swallow these days.
Yeah, this one was on my radar. I agree that a game like this should not have taken this long to emerge from the franchise.
