This has happened to our cat who managed to scramble up to a shelf in front of our big bay window in our living room. He was trying to swat at bugs that will occasionally bump into it from outside. Our shelf is twice as wide as this one, and he still lost his footing :/

Ours isn’t as high up as this one, thankfully, and we keep a cushioned rug and dog beds directly underneath it that he landed on, so he wasnt hurt. But yeah, this one would make me nervous.

'Course, they know their cat’s disposition best, maybe they’re super chill and never move very fast/suddenly. Would just hate for someone to try this and have their kitty get hurt

My cats always run across the tile floor to the carpet to puke.

The other day I watched my cat drink an obscene amount of water, like 10 minutes straight of licking, then she went to the basement and puked it all up at the base of a cabinet.

I had to empty the cabinet and move it to clean up the 99% water puke.

They think the carpet is a nice soft soil with grass growing in it. In nature, a soft surface like that is full of bacteria that will break the puke down and prevent disease from spreading. Puke on a hard surface, and that mess isn’t going away for a long time.

My cats will be about to throw up, so I’ll slide a paper towel under them, and they will try to move to get back to the floor.

Honestly feels like their only mistake was not making it roomba sized with an outer mini railing that would keep the roomba from falling off AND they could hang decorations from it. Really didn’t think about how they could multipurpose this.

ETA I retract somewhat, they could be total mavericks and get a long extension for their vacuum and then tape it to an RC car. Is it a lot of extra work? Yes. Would it be amazingly fun? Also yes. Especially if you hook up catnip spreader basket on the back (though maybe that’s unsafe, probably don’t encourage your cat to weed and balance beam).

My upstairs neighbour a few years ago had a similar thing going down into our back garden. She called it the catwalk.

I did this from our banister to a high window above our door. The cats were always testing the waters and I was afraid they’d fall. I made a ramp leading to the platform, which rests on the window sill, and short rail so they couldn’t roll off of the platform. There was a small roll of leftover carpet from the previous owners of the house. I used the rest of that for padding.

They absolutely love going up there and staring out the window at the neighborhood. Although, only 1 can be up there at a time. Their rules, not ours. If another tries to come up they’ll have a stare off or the one that was there just leaves. Usually with a few choice words.

What an even more peculiar downvote amount. Even if you (the arbitrary you, not necessarily you in particular) don’t think they’re worthy of being considered beings, it’s not like I said anything offensive or off-topic.

I just don’t consider “it” to be depriving animals of “being” status.

              You know what…

I went and looked this up because of this comment. I had never heard of “it” being used like that.

I’ve only ever heard it being used to specify something specifically as a non-person, or more generally a “being”. So I thought it was literally defining it as a non-being.

So TIL. I wasn’t trying to be prejudiced, I have literally never heard of “it” being anything other than specifically a non-living object.

So thanks for the chance to learn something interesting today.

I’m still not sure how else to read it.

From my understanding, the only “it” you could be referring to here is the cat. “its new landing spot” = “the cat’s new landing spot”. Ergo, calling the cat “it”.

My point was cats at least deserve the respect of “they” (in this example, “their new landing spot”) instead of calling them “it”.

I apologize if I’m reading it wrong, but that’s how it looks to me. Just trying to make sure to give kitties some respect.

At least my native language refers to animals as “it” so the mistake might come from there.

              Maybe.

Either way, I am confused about how standing up for cats while literally commenting on /c/cats would be downvoted so hard.

I’m still wondering why everyone got so mad in 3 words, when I was betting nice to a cat!

I wasn’t even mean to the guy I was replying to.

Unless I’m missing some kind of context here (and that would be really oddly specific), this is beneath reddit intelligence.

Not that it deserved upvotes either, it was just a remark that I totally forgot about until I got the reply notification. Lemmy should be better than this.

You weren’t standing up for cats, you were enforcing binary gender roles on cats. What if the cat doesn’t want a human idea of gender projected onto it? If I were a cat, I wouldn’t give two whiskers about human genders and pronouns.

And as I replied to another, I learned that today based on the wording of their reply.

So that’s a new thing I know now. I still don’t think “they” is binary though. It’s is kinda the star example of non-binary.

But I guess I did exclude a pronoun that I didn’t know existed. I thought the word was specifically calling the cat an object, so now I know better. It wasn’t intentional, and definitely not meant that way (as in not meant to force or exclude, aka discriminate).

Weirdly, the window looks like can be opened. Why would anyone spec an operable window in this location?

It’s nonsense and thus must lead to Narnia or Wonderland.
