It can be played single player, but even in single player mode it’s still online, presumably so the club of hArDcOrE gAmErS that Musk is trying to be a part of can brag to each other about their leaderboard scores or whatever (and also as DRM)
It can’t really be played single player, it just have faux single player mode when you can’t trade or party with others but you still need to be online.

If he was lagging then the first thing to drop would have been streaming the video, which takes considerably more bandwidth than the game itself.
He wasn’t lagging, he was just so high on ket he couldn’t even beat a tutorial boss.
