If you’re just getting into DMC because of the Netflix Anime, the game you should skip is DMC2 for a few reasons:
-
The original director of DMC1 (Hideki Kamiya) did not return for the sequel.
-
The person they replaced him with did not like Dante, nor had any experience in the genre (DMC combat exists because of a glitch from Onimusha and being able to “juggle” enemies)
-
Itsuno (director of DMC 3-5) came in towards the end of the development (it was clear the game was struggling) and added some things to improve the quality
-
take all the above, you have a game that doesn’t have the characterization, tone, finesse, gameplay of the original- and just a bad game at that
5/ To make matters worse, the game ended on a cliffhanger that is never brought up again or resolved in any following games. It was chronologically supposed to be a game that takes place later in his life, but literally now just takes place after DMC1**___**
Years ago I blasted through the original DMC in a weekend. My expectations were low and it cleared the bar , didn’t really wow me but I enjoyed it enough to try the second one. Bounced off it and never really checked out the series again.
Are you saying its worth it to check out the other games in the series?
Yeah all the others are amazing, even the goofy team ninja one with emo young Dante, despite it being wildly different stylistically. It has some fun weapons and a bonkers story where among other things one of the bosses is literally a parody of Fox News. Not an anchor, just Fox News
team ninja
Team Ninja are the Dead or Alive and Ninja Gaiden people, Ninja Theory are the Heavenly Sword, Enslaved: Odyssey to the West and Senua people who made the 2013 reboot
lol every single time I get those mixed up
It was chronologically supposed to be a game that takes place later in his life
I don’t think the DMC2 team put that much thought into it, fans just assumed it took place later in his life because of mopey Dante, but Dante was only mopey because the original director didn’t like his personality
It’s easy to forget how much of a disappointment 2 was because the series bounced back so fast, but back then people absolutely hated it and there were serious doubt the franchise would even continue after that because Capcom was quick to axe other series like Viewtiful Joe and Ōkami for not performing well enough.
Devil May Cry 5 has references to every other game in the series, including the shitty 2013 reboot. And NOT 2.
You know you shit the bed when the hated reboot is considered more than you
