My husband recently rediscovered Lenny again and a friend joined. They both find it hard to stay since it’s pretty quiet and don’t have many active niches.

No, I don’t think I know anyone else that interacts with the fediverse. there are probably a handful that I know that are even aware of it.

I joined Lemmy when the API changes happened and tried to get a couple nerdy friends to join but they didn’t bite

it’s been 2 days and i think i found like 2 “Yes” responses in the entire thread. one was a techy friend, one was vague, and any other hits were just family/friends.

it’d be cool if Fediverse got some more recognition but it’s definitely way too niche for the normies right now

no. It’s difficult to recommend it, “no it’s good trust me, there’s like none of the subs you like, and also you should go to the settings and block this list of words, also block these instances, and also do you know what a Tankie is?”

I’m fairly new to lemmy and have no idea what you’re talking about. Could you give a little breakdown?

If I talk with people about Lemmy, I’ll usually replace “lemmy” with “this social media I use, kinda like Mastodon, but for Reddit instead of Twitter” as to avoid them joining lemmy.ml and thinking that that’s the entirety of Lemmy.

I have a few friends that are fed up with Microsoft and Google and other big tech. We’ve been degoogling and trying Linux together (errr, they have - I’m the grizzled Linux junkie they all reached out to for advice).

Most of them have tried all the different fediverse products and they’ve found homes here and there.

Some of them have graduated into self-hosting even. I find this bit wonderful, if it’s unfortunate how far the industry had to rot before they considered the move.

I don’t know anyone IRL that uses the fediverse. They just use everything else and then complain it’s all owned by billionaires

Lemmy, no. Reddit, no. Fediverse: there are a few people (less than a dozen) that I have met IRL (“know” may be a strong word) and also have a more or less strong presence in the fediverse, primarily Mastodon.
