      The only problem is humans are completely incapable of doing this for more than a few minutes. It’s why lifeguards are required to take frequent breaks, for example, or why TSA agents find the water bottles but miss the guns. But it still works as a magical fig leaf for the company to deflect liability.

        You misread, which is understandable since you’re not a corpo law veteran. Full self driving means you can drive yourself without ai assistance if you choose to. No other manufacturer has marketed such a feature and Tesla is proud to bring this feature to market.

          That’s not the same as developing a working system. All they’ve done is marketed better than they’ve developed, and no other manufacturer is willing to lie to that degree.

          Another reason to tank the company.

    I hate seeing these cars on the road as I drive to work with a normal car that does all of this stuff as a basic feature but doesn’t have a cult of personality CEO promising bullshit attached to it.

    A modern sedan has all of this in play. But the companies that offer these features are very careful to explain that what they offer isn’t a robot that drives for you.

    But magical mystery tour Mars commune snake oil diamond mine scion promises a robot car!

    I just don’t get it.

    There are tons of cars our there that are better positioned to deliver a assisted driving experience that is better than these Teslas.

    I love my Honda even though it has connectivity issues. But damn if it won’t see myself in a situation where just driving my car winds up whare I smash me into a tree and burn me up.

    I understand as a driver that at some point all of this bullshit won’t help me.

    In the end it’s do you know how to drive.

      Do any Hondas have self driving? I have a pretty new civic and it only has lane assist, which I have stress tested and it absolutely requires hands on the wheel as it will not handle sharp turns. Also hugs the center line a bit more than I like.

        Lane assist combined with adaptive cruise control pretty much means my Accord is driving itself to me, as its driver. I’ve only had problems with the lane assist when the sun is shining really bright on the road when it’s low in the sky (sunset and sunrise). I think it doesn’t “see” as well at those times of day.

        Yes, I have to keep my hands on the wheel and pay attention - but every driver should anyway. There are so many crazy variables out there.

          On highways it does well enough, but yeah when the road is reflecting it gets really sketchy. Also it gets finicky around truck shadows.

            For sure. But the thing is that Honda doesn’t say their assistive features add up to self driving, yet Tesla barely has better than that yet claims that they do.

      While I agree, the driver in this article was “intoxicated”, ie drunk as f*. I feel sorry for the tree alone here.

        A Tesla owner who hasn’t paid attention to the “when we say “Autopilot” and “Full Self Driving,” we don’t expect you to believe it” message from the company might think that driving home that way after drinking is being smart and safe.

        They should simply not be allowed to call them that.

          Indeed. I thought the victim should have known because the warnings were functioning properly now, but I didn’t read it correctly; the warning system was fixed end of 2023, the crash was in 2022.

            Thanks, I wondered about that. I knew I had an updates with “improvements “ in this area but never knew what it was like before. My experience seems quite different from what too many Lemmings claim.

    Why don’t they just have autopilot slow to a crawl/ stop by the roadside if the drivers hands aren’t on the wheel?

      During April’s free trial, I tried a bunch of stuff, and when my hands were off the wheel too long, it cut out FSD and slowed within the lane.

      Most of these aren’t a simple matter of just letting it do its thing, and crashing. Some have been attempts to work around the system. Some have been keeping your foot on the pedal so it can’t slow down. Some have been people thinking they’re using FSD but not, including some questionable cutoffs when an accident is unavoidable.
