Yeah, totally different vibe here on Lemmy I’m happy to say. There are helpful people on Reddit too of course just few and far between depending on the sub.

Reddit is shit now. PCMR is just memes and weird Linux vs Windows rivalry, Piracy sub is just memes and moral grandstanding, most gaming subs are just bots posting “news” articles, AIO/AITAH are just karma farming for people selling accounts or fanfic quality fantasies, many Linux subs are either insufferably elitist, have a weird fetish for distro-hopping or are just circlejerks (looking at you r/linuxmint).
The only thing it’s still good for is niche interests which I doubt will remain the case for long.

linux4noobs@programming.dev•I don't know how to get unbanned from the debian wiki. I created accounts too quickly?
6·4 days agoSo they ban that IP or range of IPs and the offender moves to a different IP in a matter of seconds meanwhile the people still trying to legitimately access the site from that original IP can get fucked. Doesn’t seem like it solves anything much to me.

3·5 days agoThey still exist because Google isn’t really a technology company anymore. It’s an advertising company masquerading as a technology company. Their success depends on selling more ads which is why all the failed projects don’t seem to make a difference.

Patient Gamers@sh.itjust.works•steam vs gog, which game store to buy from?
132·8 days agoBuying a game on Steam gets you the same perpetual license for your copy of the game as it does on GoG (the same as any software). The difference is Steam’s DRM (requiring the Steam Client to run the game). AFAIK Steam have said in the past that they have a plan to remove it if Steam shuts down.
Here’s a video that lays it out in detail as to what game ownership means amongst other things https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUAX0gnZ3Nw.
The big question about all this stuff is how far companies (both game and non-game software) can push their “you don’t own your software” agenda before facing a significant legal challenge and what the outcome of that legal challenge will be.

4·12 days agoActually, I think the most common phrase conveying this is “it’s like talking to a brick wall”. The hardest thing here is including both inability and active choice.

Privacy@lemmy.ml•I am looking to buy a Synology NAS to replace my Raspberry Pi 4B. What data does Synology collect off the NAS?
11·12 days agoI looked into ready made NAS machines but wasn’t sold on the software that came with them. Ended up building a small PC and installing OpenMediaVault on it which I have been super happy with.
Depending on how many HDD bays you need you can just buy a refurbished office Dell or HP and it’ll do the job more than adequately.
I pronounce it AUR btw.
(In all seriousness I pronounce it like Aura without the 2nd A)
