  • I mean honestly a fundamental restructuring of democracy in the US. We need a 3rd party in the US that can hijack the Democratic party apparatus without falling victim to its trappings in order to crack the first-past-the-post system; without that, capital has the oppressive power of the top 5 most funded militaries in human history. The US squats on any country that even thinks of not playing nicely with capital, and without that there can be no resistance to climate change.

Beyond that, you really just need to prepare. Blah blah, mutual aid, community defense, etc. I’m not gonna bore you with what you know, just reiterate that it WILL help when shit hits the fan. I guarantee you when your kids are getting conscripted into the water wars, you’re gonna want to have enough community presence to push back.

  • To drop the shitpost a bit, every time I think of American politics I think about, I can’t remember his name but some racist internet personality decided he’d try meth to prove that addiction is a personal choice. Fast forward, dude obviously ended up getting his whole shit wrecked by meth addiction. Like obviously we have politicians that want to bring resource extraction home for dinner, but we have an entire populace convinced we’re just built different.

  • I wouldn’t say they could learn anything from the 90s; after all, it was those markets that led into today. It’s just that the profit motive has shifted. 30 years ago, Marvel spends a little money on an IP like Biker Mice from Mars, licenses it out to ABC to distribute and Hasbro for toy manufacturing, then ABC pockets the ad revenue while Hasbro shares climb come Christmas. Not defending the system, but at most levels there was incentive to make a product good enough to maintain hype.

Today, Disney produces Spidey and His Amazing Friends, and there is literally no financial incentive for it to be good, or even marketable. It’s streamed in-house on a subscription they know you have. The only competition for eyeballs is also a Disney Plus exclusive, so who cares as long as subs and usage times don’t drop? The toys are a wash; it’s 2025, your kid is more likely to have a smartphone in their hand than a toy. Better to invest in a freemium mobile game, or toss the character skins into a preexisting freemium game. Hell, even better, since they own the show and it’s competition, just throw everything in there. All Disney needs is the bare minimum product to keep up screentime; something they made easier on themselves by funding politicians that actively removed any and all public works to create or maintain anything else for kids to do. And the only reason they need to keep up screentime is that the real money maker now is collecting and selling user data to grow your speculative forecasts before the next quarterly. Who gives a shit selling toy manufacturing rights to Hasbro for $60 million over 3 years when you can grow stock shares by $12 billion for less than half the effort?

  • I mean, not really? Uneducated parts of the population having disproportionate amounts of children wouldn’t impact intelligence at all, like bro go back far enough and all of our ancestors were uneducated. Like it wasn’t that long ago that 100% of parents and 100% of children thought if you pissed on a certain tree you’d get struck by lightning.

Idk. Honestly I get why they did it; I’m wracking my brain and the only reasonable explanation I can think of would be smartphones, which didn’t exist when the movie was written. You don’t know what you don’t know, you know? Like I said it’s still a good movie, like it’s still funny and captures a fair bit of seeming trends, it just also sets itself up as a wet dream for people who think other people don’t deserve the right to have children, which is a pretty core belief of the people we’re trying to mock.

  • I mean the movie was fun in its time, and has a good critique of societal trends from the mid 2000’s, but yes. Literally in the beginning of the movie, after they freeze the mc, the narrator explains that society became a shithole because while intelligent people waited until their 30s to have maybe 1 kid, stupid people had so many kids that they just bred intelligence out of the gene pool. Even at the end the narrator explains that nothing really changes, because while the mc and romantic lead go off to raise 2 intelligent kids, the stupid sidekick went off to have 32. Sure, it was more a plot device than an actual moral stance, but it is also a deracialized form of literally THE core belief of the eugenics movement.

Yes, Terry Crews, funny guy, good joke, it maps onto the Trump admin decently if you squint. It’s a funny satire, but it’s also 20 years old. People were Idiocracy-posting on MySpace during the Bush admin when the movie came out. And considering the basis for Maga is also purging the undesirables, maybe resting on the laurels of a movie whose plot is based on there being immutable, undesirable genetic characteristics is a bad idea, or at least in poor taste.

  • I gotta be honest, in no way do I think anything would change if he had gone. Unless he got shot by a cop (lol), he still would have been impeached, McConnell still would have declined to convict on that impeachment, Garland still would refuse to even think about prosecuting a former president, the maga crowd would still crowd around him, and dems still would have lost in '24. MAYBE the Republican talking points would sound more insane by an nigh indistinguishable amount.

  • You may be talking past each other. This IS propaganda: Not to defend murder or extrajudicial violence, but Hamas by all accounts beheaded criminals. To dude’s point, Hamas IS a violent, repressive group born of inconceivable human suffering, as referenced by them using beheading as a form of punishment. But back to propaganda, western media is more than happy to strip all context to display Hamas as just some back-asswards Islamic terror group rather than a legitimate governmental force, despite Israel’s propensity for capital punishment (and the US’s).
